Intrepid's Petri Dish New Play Contest

For Residents of Vancouver Island/Gulf Islands Only

Deadline: Friday November 2, 2007 5 pm

Intrepid Theatre's Petri Dish New Play Contest was established in 2004 to support the creation of new project-based theatre in Victoria, and to encourage local participation in the annual Victoria Fringe Theatre Festival. The contest is sponsored by Intrepid Theatre, producers of the Fringe.

Who Can Apply: Writers, theatre companies, producers, and performing artists of all disciplines, who are permanent residents of Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands can apply for the contest.

Prize: $300 Cash Prize + a free 6-show slot in the 22nd annual Victoria Fringe Theatre Festival (Value $503.50). The dates of the Fringe are August 21-31, 2008. The public announcement of the winner will be made at the Fringe Lottery Party at the Metro Studio on the evening of November 16.

Guidelines
Projects must not have been previously produced, and should have a running time of 60 minutes or less.

Petri Dish is a contest for playwrights/ theatre artists/companies and others who want to produce their show at the Victoria Fringe Festival (August 21-31, 2008). We can't produce your script or project for you. It would be up to you to find (and pay for) the team you need (actors, directors, designers etc), rehearse, get your sets and costumes etc together, plan for what you need technically (lighting and sound), and do some promotion.

If you haven't done the Fringe before and would like to get complete details as to what the fringe provides (a technician, performance venue, technical rehearsal, and listing in the Fringe Program, and 100% of your box office receipts), and what you would be expected to provide (a fully produced show, ready to be seen by an audience) please download a copy of the Fringe Application.

Selection Criteria
The adjudication panel will consider both scripted and non-text-based projects. Projects will be rated on two primary criteria:

1) The artistic potential of the project
2) The ability of the artist or company submitting the project to carry out the proposal.

How to Apply
There is no application form. Proposals can take any form, but must include:

1. A $25 Application Fee
2. a cover letter with contact information, including address, email address, and phone number.
3. a one-page synopsis of the project.

Applicants are encouraged to include support materials, including: script, writing sample, or outline; production timeline, working budget; artistic resumes of proposed collaborators (please ask them first before you include their names in your application); and information or media clippings regarding previous work. Please refer to the selection criteria above to make sure the panel has a good idea of both what your project is about, and how you would go about getting it on stage.

Deliver your Petri Dish Application to Intrepid Petri Dish, 3rd Floor, 1014 Government Street, Victoria BC V8W 1X7 by November 2, 2007 at 5 pm.
The panel will meet and select a winner by November 9. All applicants will be notified of their status on or before November 9 by email.

Fringe Applicants
In the event that your project is not selected and you wish to apply for the Fringe Festival anyway (deadline November 15), your $25 Petri Dish Contest Fee will be applied against your Fringe Festival application fee. Please visit the HOW TO APPLY page of our website for complete Fringe application fees and details.
