"FIVE STARS - Harris sparkles as Holliday" (Times Colonist)
W
inner of the 2007 Victoria Critic's Choice Award for
Best Fringe Production.
|
"They think I'm stupid and I like it." Actor Judy Holliday had a genius-level IQ but was notorious for playing dumb blond characters. During the McCarthy era, Holliday was suspected of having communist ties. Laura Harris illuminates Holliday's efforts to protect her career and remain truthful as she testifies before the Senate Internal Security Sub Committee. Pitch Blond premiered at last year's Victoria Fringe Festival. "It's Harris' own gentle charisma - her luminous smile and bonhomie - that makes Pitch Blond memorable." Times Colonist. |

Jesse Buck." (CBC Radio) |
Please note: there is an error in our print program. There is no performance of Bubkus on May 22, but there is an additional performance on May 25.The Pay-What-You-Can show will be Fri May 23 at 8 pm.
" A wordless hour of pure entertainment....These are the things that make you appreciate live theatre all over again." (NYtheatre.com)
"This actor is a non stop whirlwind of breathless energy." (CBC Radio)
Jesse Buck's clown Bubkus (Yiddish for "nothing") creates a make-believe universe out of nothing more than a blanket, a pillow, and a toothbrush. No flashing lights, no big production values. Not even a single word. While acting out an action-packed fairy tale populated with heroes, monsters, epic battle scenes, and enchanted princesses, Bubkus can't quite conceal his own real feelings, which creep into the story. Kids and adults can enjoy Bubkus - young ones for the inventive and hilarious slapstick Bubkus brings to this enchanted world, and adults for the recognition of the things in our chaotic lives that sometimes threaten our "brave face."

"(FIVE STARS) Riveting...McDonald keeps the audience on the edge of its seat." (Monday) |
The story of a painfully shy young man and his compulsively destructive giant invisible robot. "(FIVE STARS) Yes, the robot's invisible. But what's plain to see is that Jayson McDonald is a remarkable talent. He's a skilled comic actor and natural storyteller." (CBC Manitoba) "A one-man whirling dervish of incomparable characters and smashing acting. To not be awed by this guy would simply not compute." (StarPhoenix)
McDonald won best Male Performer and the Innovation award at the 07 Victoria Fringe. Then we ran out of awards. |

In a tribute to his Cree / Métis heritage, young Victoria perfomer Rob Hunter tells the story of a sacred faimily heirloom - a buckskin coat covered in thimbles that was given to his great-great grandmother - and the way the coat wove its way into his own memories. miyo-âcimowin blends music, Aboriginal performance/storytelling, personal spirituality, and family history. "Hunter combines both historical and contemporary material...This multi-talented actor also plays several instruments and demonstrated a few by integrating them into his unique show." "I wanted to thank you for your amazing performance. We were spellbound by the stories you wove and the music that flowed from you. Your talent is evident. Thank you for providing this opportunity to our school community. It was a truly valuable experience for all of us." "Rob is well on his way....One of the people who can make a difference." |

"It's high time the rhyme-crazy juveniles of the world are celebrated as the poetic prodigies we truly were."
(
Nylon Magazine) |
Somewhere in the back of your closet gathering dust and turning yellow with age is comedic gold. Those old journals, poems, and essays you wrote as a teenager when you thought you could do no wrong, if you were to read it today you'd probably cringe at your former feelings. Imagine sharing that shame in front of an audience. That's exactly what Sara Bynoe- the 'Teen Angst Poetry Queen' and leader in the mortification movement - has been doing for years. Why are you still sitting there? Go dig through your boxes of memorabilia and pull out some of your own Teen Angst gems to share at the open mic! Check out www.youtube.com/sarabynoe for Sara's examples, then get the guidelines and sign up for a spot HERE. |

Written over 20 years ago by the late maverick monologist Spalding Gray, Swimming to Cambodia uses Gray's small role in the film "The Killing Fields" to examine global instability, social injustice, genocide, the cold war, American politics, sex, drugs, relationships, travel and the quest for perfect moments. Watching it today, queasy-making parallels to current socio-political events abound, but it's not all dark and dismal. It's hilarious, intelligent and aware. This excellent new production featuring Victoria actor Shawn Watson (directed by Theatre Inconnu's Graham McDonald) is fresh, funny, original, and a fitting tribute to the man who changed theatre with a monologue. |

'Astounding! Phobophilia was an experience as thick, dark and sensual as the velvet curtains that engulfed the audience. Really affecting, can't wait to see more!' (Hour)
|
A new transmedia performance from Montreal's 2boys.tv.
A small number of spectators (20 maximum) are led to a secret location to witness a peculiar interrogation. "This is my life, and it is the truth" confesses the man being questioned, and as further explanation an elaborate pop-up book is produced upon which is projected his story.
A delicate and miniature performance work, PHOBOPHILIA seeks to pose the question "what is the role of the poet in an age characterized by fear?" and is inspired by research into the life and art of Jean Cocteau.
The 2boys.tv duo (Montrealers Stephen Lawson and Aaron Pollard) are geniuses when it comes to the creative use of projection techniques. Their magic box opened to successively reveal one miniature set after another, each constructed with openings and holes and jutting-out bits and moving pieces, such that the 2boys' equally ingenious tiny projected images could move around and through in a gloriously choreographed and fully interactive dance between image and surface, human and technology. Every time the set changed, it was like they were opening a fresh gift and offering it to the audience. (SexGeek.wordpress.com)
