To launch to their 08-09 season at the Metro, Intrepid Theatre presents the ingenious Theatre SKAM (Lt. Nun, Unity (1918), Billy Nuthin', Stone and Ashes, etc.) in a new adaptation of a Chekhov masterpiece, My Three Sisters. The the three sisters in question are played by three real sisters: Camille, Treena, and Celine Stubel. In this adaptation, Canada stands in for turn of the century Russia, and Montreal for Moscow. Told from the viewpoint of Andre, their brother (Lucas Meyers), My Three Sisters looks back at a period when the troops were stationed in their small town, and the repercussions that affected the lives of the entire family. In an attempt to understand what has happened to them and perhaps regain some of that elusive happiness, Andre and his three sisters: Nina, Olga, and Masha - who is pregnant - look back on a year in their lives since the death of their father. Working from literal translations, playwright Amiel Gladstone (Hippies and Bolsheviks, The Wedding Pool, The Black Box) has worked with the original Russian text to create a work that is both faithful to the original with its themes of war, death, futility and love, yet presented in signature innovative and highly theatrical SKAM style that audiences across Canada, and especially here at home, have come to know and love. Five actors will play all fourteen roles of the original. Camille, Celine, and Treena Stubel are the "first family" of Victoria's stage, specifically in theatre and dance - most recently Treena appeared in award-winning The History of Everything at the 08 Victoria Fringe, and Celine was seen last season in My Chernobyl at the Belfry - a role for which she won a Jessie Richardson Award in Vancouver. SKAM stalwart Lucas Myers returns from his home base in Nelson to play Andre. Billy Marchenski is new to the company, most recently in Victoria with boca del lupo's My Dad, My Dog. Award winning designer Itai Erdal, lights, and Kristen Bond, costumes, are working to create a visually stunning look to a piece that is played out on what looks to be a simple bare wooden stage. The stage manager is Jennifer Swan. The Artistic Producer of Theatre SKAM is Matthew Payne. Running Oct 1-4 at 8 pm & October 5 at 6 pm, this premiere will be performed in-the-round in the Metro Studio, 1411 Quadra. Seating is limited to 100 per performance. Tickets are $20/$15 St/Sr, and Wed Oct 1 is Pay-What-You-Can for any unsold tickets at the door one hour before showtime. Tickets are available online, or by phone at 250-383-2663 (Mon-Fri, 10-5).
