Itai, a recent film-school graduate promptly moved back to Israel to spend every moment he could with his dying mother, shooting hours of film and taking and hundreds of pictures, documenting her final days. Written and Performed by Brian Fidler
Directed by Maiko Bae Yamamoto
Designed by David Skelton
Sound and Music by Jordy Walker

65 minutes, adult content

ramshackletheatre.ca

“Fidler’s performance leaves the audience in awe… the physical movements, often repetitions of a single set of movements, lend a beauty to his performance, and tie rigid emotional scenes with both movement and language.”

-Amanda Ramsay-MacDonald (Whitehorse Star)

William holds a cardboard box full of his late Grandfather’s things. Each object a porthole into the past, and like most memories, each one triggers yet another memory, revealing the complicated relationship between what you remember and what you can never forget. “It’s like an intelligent and juicy reality-show highlight reel of Shakespeare’s life with fabulous acting and beautiful writing.” Jessica Goldman, CBC Radio Calgary

The Puritans have closed the theatres, Shakespeare’s troupe is gone and Old Jack is out of work. While historical in its setting, the play has much to say about the present – it speaks of aging, of homelessness, and of the joyful role that the arts can play in a community. Featuring Calgary’s Christopher Hunt, When That I Was is funny, literate, theatrical and very entertaining.
