Pyaasa

Anusree Roy (Toronto ON)
Directed by Thomas Morgan Jones
"Anusree Roy's energy in Pyaasa could light up a city block...her script is direct and passionate, and her performance is spine-tinglingly alive and confident. The production is superb." (Now Magazine)
Eleven-year-old Chaya is born into India's Untouchable class, a group seen as sub-human by members of the Hindu caste system. When her mother begs a woman from a higher caste to give Chaya a job washing cups at a tea stall in Calcutta, the young girl begins a ten-day journey to adulthood. Roy's warmth, humour and charisma turn a heart-wrenching situation into a deeply affecting story of survival. Winner of two Dora Mavor Moore Awards (Outstanding New Play and Outstanding Performance by a Female), Pyaasa is "A taut, inexorable work, superbly performed." (National Post). Pyaasa is headed to the Magnetic North Festival in Ottawa in June, along with other great shows including Julia Mackey's Jake's Gift (which premiered at Uno in 2007.)

Lupe: Undone

Melissa D'Agostino (Toronto ON) Directed by Adam Lazarus
"Beyond being hilarious, Lupe manages to befriend every single person in the audience. And since she was able to conquer Toronto in 2008, we can only imagine that in 2009, she'll be well on her way to conquering the rest of the world." (Torontoist.com)
Critic's Pick, Outstanding Performance, Outstanding Overall Production (Now Magazine): Lupe Dominguez has gotten the night off from her job at the mattress factory to set up a rendezvous with her lover. She has even created a surprise boudoir of love. Unfortunately her lover is very, very late. And Lupe's ex-husband Emilio is stalking her from an apartment across the road. And just when things couldn't get any more complicated, what's an audience of strangers doing in her love den instead of her new boyfriend? Now Lupe must keep the audience entertained, her ex-husband at bay and hold herself together for when her lover finally arrives. Everything is at stake for Lupe in this torrid, love-wrenching tabloid diary... with a side of salsa!

Every Time I See Your Picture I Cry

Daniel Barrow (Winnipeg MB)
Last seen at Uno in 2003 ( The Face of Everything) , Winnipeg-based artist Daniel Barrow has become one of the country's most celebrated interdisciplinary artists, using obsolete technologies to perform live, animated comic-book narratives.
Winner of the 2008 Images Prize and Canada Council’s Victor Martyn Lynch-Staunton award in 2008, Daniel Barrow's latest is a contemporary low-budget slasher, blending "manual animation" on an overhead projector with video, music, and live narration. This is the story of a garbage man who sifts through trash, collecting personal information and then tracing pictures of each citizen through the windows of their homes as they sleep, to add to his illustrated, biographical phone-book. What he doesn't yet realize is that a deranged killer is trailing him, murdering each citizen he includes in his book.
