"There's no other humorist in Canada I would
rather spend time with." (Toronto Star) |
"One of Canada's greatest comedic actors, Jones is not to be missed" (Halifax Daily News)
Andy Jones is the hilariously sarcastic Uncle Val - an indignant, 70-year-old retired fisherman, displaced from his outport home. It's 1987, and trapped in the 'big city' of St. John's, Val struggles to figure out what life has left to offer him. Is there anything of use for a senior citizen in the suburbs to do? Any reason for him to continue on? Is there any mystery or magic left for him to discover? Uncle Val brings us an evening of Christmas reminiscences, encounters with the Beatles, and the danger of St. John's winters, or as Val likes to call it: The Seniors' Olympics. Amid births, deaths and even romances, there is the ongoing drama of his obnoxious son-in-law's George Street pub, and Uncle Val's devilish brand of babysitting "Do's and Don'ts", drawn from his experience as live-in babysitter for his daughter's rhyming youngsters, Jimmy and Kimmy.
" Andy Jones is so brilliant and heartwarming, you wish you could hold his words in your fingers like a string of worry beads ... Do yourself a favour and go see An Evening with Uncle Val " (Halifax Chronicle-Herald)
Intrepid Theatre is delighted to bring Andy Jones back to Victoria for a third visit having presented his solo shows Off the Wall (2003) and King o' Fun (2005). |

A one-woman Battle of Britain. This is the true-life story of Linda Griffith's journey with her father to Fiskerton in the UK, to attend the very last reunion of his WWII comrades, the Royal Air Force 49 th Squadron, Bomber Command. It's a story about war: between the Allies and Nazis, and between a father and daughter. It's the first night, the last chance for her to comprehend the real war, the last chance for the Old Bastard to show his scars.
"Performed in simplicity, with basic lights and a stool, yet we see the trip, the war, England, Canada and most importantly, a father and daughter. Last Dog tells this story without an ounce of sentimentality. It's real" (Daniel McIvor).
Lin Griffiths is the winner of five Dora Mavor Moore Awards, a Gemini, two Chalmer's Awards, and the actor's Guild of America Award for her title performance in the John Sayles film Lianna . Her plays include Maggie & Pierre, The Duchess a.k.a. Wallis Simpson, The Darling Family, Alien Creature, and The Age of Arousal. |

"Clueless, guileless and
absolutely priceless"
(Edmonton Journal) |
Crime has a new enemy. It is 1896. Barnaby Gibbs, incurable optimist and Sherlock Holmes fan, is checking on a friend's empty house when he finds a man in the bedroom, dressed in black holding a bag of stolen belongings. There is only one conclusion a reasonable man could come to. Fortunately, Gibbs is not a reasonable man, and when the stranger tells him he is actually the famous detective Antoine Feval, a new crime-fighting duo is born. Uno featured Chris Gibbs in "The Power of Ignorance" in 2006.
"A delight from beginning to end - one of the most cleverly written and performed shows I've ever seen." ***** (Eye Weekly)
"Chris Gibbs is such an effortlessly natural, off-the-cuff comedian that it's easy to overlook what a superb playwright he is. Arguably the year's most perfect script. (Vue Weekly)
"Worthy of a funnier Arthur Conan Doyle, full of twists, turns, and gadzooks moments." ***** Now Magazine |

Maja Ardal's delightful solo comedy features eleven quirky characters in an epic tale of Celtic culture, playground politics, and childhood. Schoolgirl Elsa, fresh from Iceland, is thrown into the rough-and-tumble of a 1950's Edinburgh inner-city school. "A wonderful production" (CBC) that will strike a chord with audiences of all ages. "A one-woman tour-de-force" (The Examiner) " Sly, certain writing and deadly comic timing - don't miss Ardal's brilliant work as Elsa's starchy teacher, her prissy nemesis June, and her raggedy best friend, Adele." "A Must See" (The Stage, UK)
5/5 Stars
(The List, Edinburgh)
|
Toronto based actor Raoul Bhaneja plays over 17 characters from Hamlet in an exhilarating and accessible 95 minute solo adaptation directed by Robert Ross Parker. While a mind-bendingly virtuosic challenge for a single actor (which for Bhaneja seems effortless,) the real magic of the show happens in the minds of the audience. Stripping away all but the essentials - The Audience, The Actor, and The Text - Bhaneja guides us like an ancient storyteller, allowing viewers to construct the visual world of the play in their own minds. Hamlet (solo) debuted at Theatre Passe Muraille and has toured across Canada, as well as to New York and the UK.
"Bhaneja's reading doesn't miss an iambic beat. It's an extraordinary interpretation that allows the great play to speak for itself." (Montreal Gazette)
UNO EXTRA DOC+TALK - On Wed May 28 we'll be screening the recent TV documentary about HAMLET {SOLO}, and Bhaneja will be on hand to speak about his work and answer questions. (Read More) |

Suddenly Dance Theatre presents UNODANZ, a new solo dance component of the Uno Festival. The inaugural program features an evening of three distinct dance works, two live and one on film: AVENUE OF BUTTERFLIES (20 mins, Live; Victoria)
Conceived and Choreographed by Karen Kaeja
Performed by Lisa Milloy
A tiny image of butterflies begins to emerge through the dancer's articulate skin - through undulation, sequencing, collisions, and release. In seconds are extremes of freedom and captivity, stirring the desire of spontaneous flight. BARE HANDED (26mins, Dance on Film; Belgium)
Directed by Thierry Knauff
Choreographed and Performed by Michèle Noiret
(image: ©Films du Sablier) A poetic dance film of uncommon beauty. With light and shadow as her partners, Ms. Noiret approaches the world created by her dance, confronts and captures it. She immerses herself in this world and eventually loses herself in it. In this way the rhythm of dance joins the pleasure of pure cinema in fluid, dream-like harmony. SONG (25 mins, Live; Toronto)
Choreographed by DA Hoskins
Performed by Danielle Baskerville SONG paints the portrait of the dancer's life as a cinematic journey - through text and movement, the work grounds itself by knowing at its heart the character of the story, the truth, the fiction, and the path of memory. Featuring a soundscape by Gilles Goyette. Audiences will remember seeing (or hearing about) Baskerville's blazing performance in DA Hoskins' Hard Candy at the 2006 Romp! Festival. |

An uncompromising look at a Chilean refugee family living in BC's lower mainland in the 70's by acclaimed Vancouver playwright Carmen Aguirre, in a moving production from Victoria's Puente Theatre. Seen through the eyes of eight-year-old Manulita (played with great warmth by Chilean-born, Victoria-based actress Romina Miranda), the struggles of an immigrant child desperate to fit in are set beside the complex political realities of Pinochet's regime and the culture of the Chilean refugee community. Originally written in 1995, Chile con Carne has been performed around the world.
"I am elated the story is no longer mine, that it belongs to everyone who watches it, and sees themselves in it." (Carmen Aguirre, Playwright). |
